Boils Treatment

Mar 11th, 2009 | By Will Allen | Category: Boils, Remedies

Boils can be painful and unattractive, but in general, they’re not particularly serious.  However, they must be treated.  Boils treatment is relatively straightforward and painless — at least insofar as having the boils remain as they are until they heal on their own.

What causes boils?

There are a number of different reasons boils can occur.  They always occur because of some type of skin infection common usually caused by the Staphylococcus bacteria entering through an irritation or injury in the skin’s barrier.  Some people are more susceptible to these types of infections than others.

People who are diabetic can often have difficulty with boils.  In addition, people who have weak immune systems because of autoimmune disorders, AIDS, or even simply because they’re ill with a relatively innocuous illness for a short period of time can also get boils.  If someone has poor hygiene in general, they can develop boils as well. Therefore, one option for boils treatment is simply to practice very good hygiene; this will completely eradicate boils due to poor hygiene, and can greatly alleviate symptoms even when there are other causes besides poor hygiene.

Boils symptoms

Boils appear as hard, red, painful bumps on the skin.  If it’s on the eyelid, it is often called a “sty.”  The boil itself starts either in a gland or in a hair follicle.  Other smaller boils can “cluster” around an original larger one, and this is called “carbuncle.”  If you develop boils, you also usually develop a fever and your lymph nodes swell.

When to seek boils treatment

Most often, boils do not require emergency medical treatment.  Most often, you can carefully drain the boils yourself and manage your own symptoms as long as the pain is not severe.  However, if the pain becomes severe, a second boil appears, you can’t drain the boil, or the skin around the boil turns red and emits “streaks” in your skin (signaling a blood infection), you do need immediate medical attention.  This is especially imperative if you are already import health as previously described with a suppressed immune system, or if you have a high fever or chills.

Boils treatment at home

Boils treatment at home is pretty simple as long as you are not in any of the above situations whereby immediate medical attention is needed.  Warm compresses are among the best boils treatment.  Warm compresses will draw the post to the surface of the boil, whereupon it will burst after you’ve done so several times.

Once the boil begins to drink, using antibacterial soap to wash repeatedly until the pus has disappeared.  Put a medicated ointment on top of the boil and then apply bandage.  Wash, reapply ointment and re-bandage the boil two or three times a day until the boil heals.

Boils treatment for large boils

Boils treatment for large boils may require intervention from a healthcare professional right from the start.  The health care provider will need to open it up with a sterile scalpel (after numbing the area) so that it can drain.

If boils continue to recur

If boils continue to recur, simple boils treatment is not going to suffice to keep them at bay.  In general, these signify a more serious underlying problem, such as an autoimmune disorder or diabetes.  See your doctor if you are doing everything else right (such as practicing good personal hygiene and taking care of minor skin wounds as soon as they occur) but boils continue to recur.
