Organic Farming

Organic farming, simply put, is farming that is done without artificial products like pesticides, or synthetic fertilizer. An organic farmer refuses to use additives in his or her livestock feed and, instead of pumping the land full of synthetic enzymes and growth products, rely on crop rotation and compost to keep their crops thriving every year.

Most of the food people buy and eat these days is grown and raised on corporate farms and ranches. Corporations will use whatever artificial means necessary to ensure that their food is the biggest and the most ripe and grows more quickly than the food produced by organic competitors. Cattle are injected with growth hormones; vegetable crops are grown in fields that are regularly sprayed with pesticides and in soil that has been treated with genetically modified organisms.

Organic farmers refuse to use any sort of product that cannot be found naturally. Instead of mass produced fertilizer, an organic farmer uses compost that they make themselves. Organic farmers practice water conservation and work to produce food in an environmentally friendly way. This is far more intense work than the work done on corporate farms.

At an organic farm, the work is done mostly by humans or machines that don’t produce carbon emissions or pollute the atmosphere or the ground. At a corporate farm the work is done mostly by machines and with the help of synthetic materials. In the US most of the food you will find in supermarkets is grown and raised on corporate farms. In Europe, organic farms are subsidized by the government.

Food produced by organic farming might not be as pretty as the food grown on corporate farms, but it is far superior to the food raised on corporate farms. The food tastes better and is better for you. Many people report feeling better after eating organic food on a regular basis. Experts also agree that food produced by organic farming is better for children.

Most supermarkets have adopted a section specifically for food grown on organic farms. As more people realize the benefits of organic farming and how much better organic food is more and more businesses are embracing organic farming and the goods it produces.

Food produced by Organic farming usually sports a label that helps you identify which food is organic and which food was grown on corporate farms. If you are interested in eating more organic food, look for the organic label.
