The Utility Room Tour

A number of products that you find in the utility room contain harmful and toxic chemicals. 

Products like spot remover, mothballs, mildew cleaner, mold cleaner, sheets for anti-cling, laundry detergent and softener, deoderizer for the room, cleaner for the carpet.

The Usual Suspects:

Perchloroethylene or 1-1-1 Trichloroethane Solvents:  Used in cleaners for the carpet and spot removers. 

This can cause kidney and liver damage if consumed. 

Perchloroethylene is a suspected carcinogen for animals and humans.

Naphthalene or Paradichlorobenzene:  Used in mothballs. 

Napthalene can damage your eyes, blood. Liver, skin, kidneys, the central nervous system, and is a suspected carcinogen for humans.  

Paradichlorobenzene can damage the liver, kidneys, and the central nervous system.

Sodium Acid Sulfate and Hydrochloric Acid:  Used in cleaner for toilet bowls. 

These can cause skin burning and vomiting, diarrhea, and burning in the stomach if consumed. 

If inadvertently splashed in eyes it can cause blindness.

Also–Residues from fabric softeners and the commonly used fragrances in them can cause irritation.   

Possible spray starch ingredients include phenol, formaldehyde, and pentachlorophenol and aerosolized particle (including cornstarch) can cause irritation in the lungs.
